Yoga For The Whole Family

For many people yoga can be a solitary activity.  This intense and relaxing ‘me time’ can be a great way to unwind from a hard day.  Letting off some steam, literally if you’re off to hot yoga, or just calming down and centering yourself, are some of the hallmarks of yoga practice.  The nature of yoga has therefore been seen to be an individual (though not individualistic) pursuit.  Although the practice of yoga can help one to move beyond ego, the path itself can be a lonesome one.

Now, however, with new yoga classes and studios popping up every hour around the globe, there is a way to practice yoga with the whole family.  Family yoga classes are becoming increasingly common and popular.  While many parents may have been teaching their little ones yoga poses from an early age, now the whole family can partake together.

Sharing the benefits of your practice with your family can be a great way to include them in your passion and to bond as a whole.  Because of the limited time most people have nowadays to spend with their families, alongside work and trying to hit the gym every other day, family yoga is a great, and much needed, invention.  Family yoga allows you to spend time with the family, while getting in a workout.  More than this, it can also help teach your kids the importance of fitness, peace of mind, and relaxation.

Family yoga is often centered on helping the family to reconnect after a long week, or just to spend some quality time together in a fun and stress free space.  If you’ve been running around like a chicken with its head cut off trying to get the lunches ready, get yourself ready and get the kids off the school and you and your partner to work, then you may be in serious need of some peace and relaxation.  But, it is important to remember that your kids might be as well.  Children pick up on stress very quickly, so having a place to go where they can learn to calm themselves and spend time with you when you’re calm and relaxed simply has too many benefits to list off.

So if you’re looking for something to do with the whole family this might be just the thing.  Yoga doesn’t have to be a solitary activity.  Each person can find their own balance and peace of mind while sharing in communion with their family and peers.  Yoga is a group activity anyways, so family yoga is really the next logical step.

If you’re not sure where to look begin by checking with your local community center, yoga studio, gym, or mothers’ center.  Many of these places now offer family yoga.  If they don’t or if you’re having trouble finding a place that does, why not get together with some friends or neighbors with kids and ask your local center to look into offering this class.  If you have others willing to show their interest then this might inspire a new offering.  Alternatively, if one of you is a yoga aficionado, then you might want to start doing your own practice with the families in a local park.  Whatever way you choose, it is surely going to be a benefit for the whole family.
