Why Do People In Ikaria Live So Long?

There are a few spots around the world that stand out against the rest of the world when it comes to longevity. The people in these places live longer than those in other parts of the world and they also stay healthy well into their old age. One of these places which has been studied by many is a small island called Ikaria, Greece. Over one-third of everyone in the northeastern end of Ikaria reaches age 90 adn they also have 20% less cancer and 50% less heart diseases.  Here are a few reasons why these people are so lucky to live a long and healthy life:

1.A diet filled with Greens.  Greens foods are everywhere in Ikaria. Spinach,  fennell, oregano, beans, and numerous other green foods are grown fresh in this tiny Island. One only has to go into their back yard to prepare a fresh, organic and extremely healthy meal filled with antioxidant packed green foods. Ikarians base their meals around fresh vegetables and meat and breads are consumed in much smaller portions.

2.Low Stress Lifestyle. The people in Ikaria are not slaves to their watches. No one is worried about the time or in a rush to get anywhere. There is no feeling of urgency or the need to be somewhere at a certain time. Ikaria takes the term “Island Life” to a new level. It is this laid back approach that can be linked to a low stress level and a much lower chance of heart problems.

3.Strong sense of community.  Families live together or are not far from each other and there is a very strong sense of community on this Island.  The Ikarian people have very strong social networks and close friends, no matter what their age. Unlike many other societies where the elderly are almost segregated, in Ikaria all of the generations hang out together. Strong bonds with family and friends has been proven to increase longevity.

There are numerous other factors that contribute to the Ikarian people&undefined;s long lifeline – many of which may still be unknown. Drinking herbal tea s , exercising every day, drinking goats milk and taking daily naps are also thought to contribute to their healthy lives.
