A large part of a balanced and nutritious diet is fruit. Fruit should be eaten often due to the fact that it is extremely nutritious and contains a high amount of antioxidants. It also contains very few calories but provides a ton of taste, making it easy to sneak into your diet as a breakfast, lunch, dinner or snack. Here are the top five fruits to stock up on:

1.Apples. An apple a day does keep the doctor away. Not only are they extremely high in fibre but they lower the risk of heart disease.  Apples also contain antioxidants , which have been proven to have promote heart health and fight signs of premature aging such as dull skin and wrinkles.

2.Apricots. Although maybe not the most popular choice of fruit, apricots are one of the healthiest. Fresh apricots are best, however dried ones are nutritious as well.  Apricots are full of potassium and iron, as well as vitamins A, C and E.

3.Bananas. A perfect breakfast pairing or an on-the-go snack, bananas are always a good choice. Readily available and cheap, bananas are a great source of potassium and fibre. They will fill you up without filling you out.

4.Blackberries: These delicious berries pack a lot of punch. They are very high in antioxidants as well as vitamins B1, B2, C and E. They can be eaten fresh or frozen and are a great filling for pies or a healthy addition to smoothies.

5.Blueberries. Similar to the blackberry, blueberries contain very high amounts of antioxidants. They are one of the healthiest snacks you can have and also make a wholesome dessert with very little calories.  Blueberries help to promote brain health and prevent high blood pressure.

To get more fruit into your diet, stock up while they are in season and freeze individual bags of fruit. That way you will always have fruit on hand and it is cheaper than buying in the off season. The fruit can be thawed and eaten by itself, added to baking or put into smoothies.
