Starving Yourself to Lose Weight?

Your diet has an extreme influence over your metabolism and proper nutrition habits will ensure that your metabolism is running along at a fast clip. Starving yourself or going on a crash diet may seem like an easy path to weight loss, but it’s actually counterproductive and will end up leading to weight gain in the long run.

Not only is food deprivation unsustainable over a long period of time, but starving yourself will lead to your metabolism slowing down as it preserves calories.  When you resume eating, your body’s metabolism will be so slow that it will start storing calories as fat which will lead to weight gain.

So what can should you do if you’re trying to lose weight? The answer is to eat more than less. Accelerate your metabolism by eating regularly, 5-6 times small meals a day. Better yet, graze all day from the moment you get up till when you sleep. Now many people may disagree with eating a snack before bed but a late night snack will ensure the fewest amount of hours your body will go without food. It’s better for your metabolism to go 8 hours without food than 12 hours. Personally, I opt for a protein shake every night before I hit the hay.

By eating at regular intervals and following a balanced diet that includes high-quality protein (lean beef, game meat, lean chicken, eggs, fish, and whey), essential fats (nuts, seeds, flaxseed oil, fish oils, and krill oil), and fibre-rich carbohydrates (vegetables, fruits, whole grains), you will be able to reach your goal and more importantly, keep the weight off.
