Preparing for Healthy Holidays

The time of year is upon us again-the colder weather, the longer darker days. This is the time of year when many people decide to head to a warmer climate for a much deserved vacation. Instead of packing on the pounds only to return home to torture yourself with a rigid diet around Christmas time, try these tips for having a healthy, active vacation and keep your waist size at bay.

1. Plan an active vacation. Instead of just lazing around the pool-go swimming! There are tons of fun activities you can do on vacation to keep yourself trim, including snorkeling, scuba diving, water skiing, swimming, and hiking. If you pack your schedule full of these fun things to do, chances are you are going to keep the weight off and have a fun, adventure filled vacation at the same time.

2. Be wary of alcohol consumption. Everyone wants to have a few drinks on your vacation-what’s a vacation without relaxing by the pool or on the beach with a few margaritas? Although it may seem harmless to consume a few daiquiris or margaritas, just one of these delicious frozen drinks pack in the same amount of calories as about eight fast food tacos! Having a beer or wine is a much better choice and still lets your indulge without all of the guilt.

3. Make good food choices. If you are driving to your destination, be sure to pack lunches and snacks to tide you over along the way and avoid stopping at fast food stops or high calorie restaurants. Once you are at your destination, try and avoid high calorie meals and deserts and opt for something healthier like fresh fruit, which is usually readily available in warmer climates. Also, take the time to scout our healthier restaurant and café options if you will be dining out.

By following these easy tips, you will be on your way to a great vacation without having to sacrifice your health or weight. Also don’t forget to pack your vitamins-just because you’re on vacation doesn’t mean you should give up your daily health regimen.
