Live Longer with the Icelandic Diet
Your diet not only affects your weight, but also plays a big part in your life span. Surprisingly, those who live in Iceland have one of the longest life spans of all countries-79 years old for men. This country also has one of Europe’s lowest rates of heart disease. The reason? Their diet.
Iceland banned the import of livestock over a hundred years ago and also eat a diet rich in Omega 3 fatty acids and wild fish. They also enjoy a thick yogurt called Skyre which has no fat in it. The people of Iceland commonly start their day with a full meal rich in protein such as free range, organic eggs. Make sure to pair your eggs with a piece of whole wheat toast and a slice of non fat turkey or unsalted bacon. If you are watching your weight, cut out the yolk and only cook with egg whites. Icelandic people also tend to eat smaller meals as the day goes on. With a big breakfast in the morning, you can easily slim down your meals as the day goes on. For lunch try a sandwich made with whole grain toast and a slice of lamb or turkey-some type of low fat protein. Instead of mayo substitute mustard (which has less than half of the calories) and fill the rest of the sandwich with veggies such as cucumbers, spinach, tomato and sprouts. For a snack, try a small helping of yogurt or a half a cup of cottage cheese with a slice of fruit. Icelandic food is commonly filled with protein which has nutritional value, keeps you full, and helps your body keep lean muscle while burning fat. Dinner should be a small plate of fish, brown rice and roasted or steamed vegetables such as zucchini or peppers.
The basic principals of the Icelandic diet are simple-eat foods high in protein throughout the day. Also make sure that you always eat breakfast which revs up your metabolism first thing in the morning and keeps your body from storing fat. Also make sure to only eat foods which have nutritional value, not junk food. Following a diet with these basic principles is sure to get (or keep) you slim and healthy.
