Children dealing with the oftentimes excruciating pain of kidney stones are becoming increasingly more common around the world. There have been some reports showing an increase of 500 percent in the United States over the past several years. It has been thought for many years that only adults were affected by kidney stones but new research has shown that more children than ever are suffering from this and it goes undetected by doctors a lot of the time.
The real cause of kidney stones is still unknown but there are ways to decrease your risk of developing them. The recent increase in the rise of their presence in children is probably due to deteriorating diets. Many children are not fed proper meals consisting of leafy green vegetables, fresh fruit, and whole grains but instead are given processed foods, canned foods, and foods which are high in salt and trans fats. Also, many children do not consume enough water but instead are given sugary juice and sugar filled soft drinks. Most kidney stones in children are calcium based so their idea environment to develop is in a body with too little water combined with these poor eating habits. In order to keep children healthy their kidneys should be flushed and this can happen mainly by drinking lots of water. The amount depends on the age and size of the child but as a general rule of thumb they should drink about four extra cups of water a day on top of any other beverage they consume.
Treating kidney stones in children can be done with home remedies. Olive oil mixed with lemon juice is said t help pass kidney stones easier, as does citrus juice. If your child is having any kind of strange pain, make sure to get them to the doctor to be diagnosed immediately.
