Green Tea Improves Eye Health

New research out of Hong Kong suggests that eye diseases such as glaucoma can be protected with the antioxidants found in green tea. The antioxidants, called catechins, were found in tissue structures found in the eyes of lab rats after ingesting the green tea.

These catechins belong to a family of antioxidants that include vitamin E and C, lutein and zeaxanthin. The study analyzed if the catechins that were orally ingested passed from the stomach to the gastrointestinal tract to the eye tissue.

The researchers investigated the eyes of dead rats, including the cornea, lens, retina, choroid-sclera, vitreous humor, and aqueous humor, that were fed a green tea extract. What surprised them is that the eye structures absorbed significant amounts of catechins that lasted up to 20 hours after consumption.

The results concluded that consuming green tea, along with its many other health benefits, can also protect the eye from oxidative stress. The next step for the researchers is human clinical studies.
