The Good News On Chocolate

Just in time for Easter new research reveals what many have claimed for a good long while, that chocolate does a body good.  According to scientists in Germany, one small square of chocolate per day might actually help lower the risk of heart disease and lower blood pressure.

This ten years study concluded that those participants who ate the most chocolate, on average .03 ounces per day or 7.5 grams) had lower blood pressure than those who ate the least, (approx. 0.06 ounces per day).  Not only was this the case, but those consuming the higher amounts of chocolate were also about thirty-nine percent less likely to suffer a heart attack.

In comparing the two groups, the overall findings suggest that those who ate more chocolate thus had better health outcomes at least with regards to these two conditions.  So if those eating the least amount of chocolate increased their intake by only .02 ounces a day (6 grams), the study estimates that 85 fewer strokes and heart attacks per 10,000 people might occur over a period of ten years.
Prevention of both heart attack and stroke has long been a concern of health officials and health care workers.  Yet so far, most recommendations have surrounding cutting out junk foods, as well as fatty meats and greasy foods to the dismay of fast food lovers everywhere.

Yet, while it may be exciting news for the die hard chocolate addicts out there, it is worth noting that six grams of chocolate is in fact only the equivalent of one small square.  So before you go binging on chocolate as part of your new healthy living plan, it would be wise to remember this.

The benefits associated with eating a limited amount of chocolate per day are terrific news; however should chocolate begin to replace healthy snacks and healthy meal choices than their benefits will soon be outweighed.  Most chocolate is high in sugar and calories and excessive consumption will lead to weight gain and all of its potential risks.

If you are looking to reap the benefits therefore without suffering the negative consequences, choose a good quality organic dark chocolate and limit yourself to one scare per day.  Chocolate can be kept in the freezer to keep in fresh and small amounts then broken off as a little treat.  If like some people though you are simply unable to exercise moderation in this regard, it may simply be best to avoid it all together and opt for other heart healthy options.  For those who can’t eat just one square a day, fresh fruit might be a better heart saving option.
