Carbohydrates have been getting a bad break from the media in recent years and weight loss fads are continuously preaching a low carb diet but what many of us fail to realize is that carbs are the body's preferred energy source.

Carbohydrates include everything from grains, fruit, vegetables to soft drinks and candy. The best carbs to eat are ones that have a high concentration of nutrients such as vitamin, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants.

The following list of “good” carbs will help give you the fuel you need to take on the day:

Whole grains – digests easily before or after working out. Don't opt for any pre-packaged sugary whole grain oats. Instead, use plain oats and sprinkle with nuts and dried fruit to give it extra flavouring.

Smoothies and shakes – combine yogurt, frozen fruit and a scoop of protein for a nutrient-dense meal replacement. Get all your calcium and Vitamin C to help boost your immune system.

Mixed greens – chock full of enzymes and complex carbohydrates will help keep you energized and feeling good all day and night. Multi-grain pasta – Pasta doesn't have to come from wheat. Alternatives such as flax or spelt pastas are just as delicious and also contain high levels of protein and fiber for a complete wholesome meal.

Sweet potatoes and yams – a true superfood, these carbohydrates are packed with vitamins and minerals. Containing a high level of potassium, Vitamin B6 and Vitamin A, sweet potatoes and yams provide the perfect healthy fuel.

If you eliminate all the empty or processed carbohydrates, you'll be able to greatly fuel your body and charge your body for a high-octane workout. Your body will thank you for it!
