Eating Seasonal Foods
With foods only climbing in price, eating in the season is one of the smartest things that you can do. Most people need to find ways to cut down their grocery bill, as the pricing of food is getting much too expensive for the average family. The good news is that with a little bit of knowledge you can easily eat healthy and relatively cheap. Each season has fantastic fruits and vegetables which are ripe and plentiful-the more the food, the cheaper it costs. Fall is actually one of the best seasons with the largest selection of fruits and vegetables readily available.
Apples are one of the most nutritious and cheapest foods that should be at the top of your grocery list for fall. Make sure to buy organic apples as this fruit can carry one of the largest amounts of chemicals on its skin if pesticides are used. At this time of year the price of apples declines because they are being harvested, so you will be paying almost the same price for organic apples as you do non organic apples in the off season. Squash is also in season in the fall. Both acorn and butternut squash can be found everywhere for quite cheap. If buying acorn squash keep an eye out for blemish-free dull green rind and remember that this vegetable can keep for up to two months. If buying butternut squash it is important that it is top heavy and blemish free. Butternut squash is a great pair with any meal and is delicious in soup. Squash is extremely high in Vitamin C , B, A and potassium. Cauliflower is another nutritious option for fall. You can use it to make stir-fry, vegetable platters, add it to salads, and even make a tasty cauliflower casserole. Cauliflower is a great substitute for potatoes-try cooking it until very soft and mashing just as you would potatoes. It has the same taste, although lighter, and about one third of the calories!
Fall is a great time to focus on more warming, autumn harvest foods and take advantage of their discounted prices. Shopping at a local farmers market is sure to provide even more savings while supporting your local farmers community and being environmentally friendly at the same time.
