Drunkorexia - a Dangerous Diet
There is now a new health scare emerging and it&undefined;s call “drunkorexia”. Although not a textbook medical term, drunkorexia refers to those who replace meals with alcohol. This phenomenon is not new, but has been growing in popularity over the last few years. It is most predomenant in young women who are calorie counters. They often skip meals in exchange for drinking so as to not feel so guilty about the calories they are consuming.
Though healthy women try to eat before a night out on the town so as to not get too tipsy, drunkorexics will purposely skip meals or even not eat all day just to watch their waist line. One glass of wine has about 150 calories so depending on the amount you drink, alcohol can defnitely add up fast. Experts say that the drunkorexic demographic is mainly young women who are in high school, college, and university. One report states that about 40% of young women in university or college have skipped a meal to have an alcohol drink. Young girls at the height of their insecurity are bombarded with images of thin, perfect women and its not so easy to feel confident about themselves. Also, in university there is a huge pressure to drink a lot and frequently yet still meet the ideal of a thin, beautiful woman. It&undefined;s a lot to live up to and it is easy for women to get caught up in this scary type of eating disorder. The correlation between eating disorders and alcohol consumption is something that has been proven long ago. People suffering from Bulemia are far more likely to have an alcohol addiction problem than those who are normal eaters.
The roof of drunkorexia does not lie in the fact that women are skipping calories in meals for an alcoholic drink-it lies in the extent to which they are drinking. Forgoing fries with your meal so that you may have a martini later is healthy and smart if you are watching your weight. Where the problem lies is not eating enough to nourish your body but yet going out and having numerous drinks to the point of intoxication. Young women need to be very mindful making sure they get the right vitamins and nutrients and only drinking alcohol in moderation, if at all.
