Diet for Healthy Eyes

An extremely important part of our overall health that is commonly neglected are the eyes. Many times we do not take care of our eyes or get regular check ups until something starts bothering us and often by that time it is too late. There are many things that you can do to take care of your eyes and if you start now hopefully they will stay healthy throughout your lifetime.

A very important part of eye health is diet. Many eye diseases stem from not having the right nutrients in our system. In order to prevent these diseases from affecting you, start by loading up on antioxidants.  There are a million reasons to eat fruits and vegetables and antioxidants is just one more. Vitamin C, E and A are all antioxidants and can help prevent age related macular degeneration cataracts and other eye diseases. Pick fruits and veggies that are colorful such as oranges, peppers, carrots, spinach, cranberries, and apples. Try to eat these foods raw as much as possible because nutrient content is greatly reduced through cooking. If you must, steam veggies lightly instead of grilling or overcooking them in stews and soups.

Along with eating right, there are many other precautionary steps you can take to keep your eyes healthy and your sight in tact. Try to wear sunglasses with protective lenses as much as possible when you are outdoors, especially in the summer. It is also good to give your eyes a break from television, computers, and other digital media sources which can strain them and cause vision problems. Also, see an ophthalmologist at least once a year for a regular check up. Even if your eyes feel fine, there may be problems that only they can detect and are best caught in the early stages.
