Relax With Kava Kava
Kava is an ancient crop which was grown in the western Pacific. The plant is known by other names and in Hawaiian is called ‘awa, in Samoa called ‘ava an in Fiju yaquona. The word kava usually referred to a both the beverage made from its roots and the plant itself.

Kava is consumed throughout the Pacific Ocean cultures of Polynesia. It has sedating effects and its therefore consumed as a means to achieve greater relaxation without sacrificing mental clarity. Its active ingredients are known as kavalactones.
Many Western places today utilize this plant as both a relaxant and an anti-nausea. It has been concluded in another study that kava was more effective than placebo medicines when it came to calming social anxieties.
Safety concerns have recently been raised because of the use of the stems and leaves by large factories and supplement makers. Utilizing these parts of the plant has been shown to raise liver toxicity. These concerns are not a problem when supplement makers utilize solely the root of the plant so make sure to read labels and inquire with manufacturers if this information is not specified.
The pharmacological effects of this plant include a mild sedation and a slight numbness in the gums and mouth. It is also responsible for inducing vivid dreams. It has been used as a mood enhancer, and a cognitive performance promoter. Research suggests that the active kavalactones do ot actually alter dopamine or serotonin levels. Thus, heavy and long term use of the plant does not seem to cause any diminishment in mental ability.
Kava has also at times a slightly euphoric effect and it has therefore a potential for addiction. It is a potent drink which can bring about a deep dream filled sleep. Upon awakening however, unlike alcohol or some pharmaceutical substances, the individual does not shown any physical or mental effects. Thinking remains clear and individuals often awake feeling more rested, more stimulated than they would normally.
In moderate occasional use Kava can be a good alternative for those struggling with sleep disorders, mild anxiety and/or exhaustion. As noted above make sure to seek out a preparation that uses only the roots and be sure to use it only in moderation when necessary. It is a powerful plant with many beneficial effects, but as with everything, moderation is key. As a remedy for moments of high stress and restlessness however this might be the right supplement to get you one your way to a deep restful sleep without the consequences of fatigue and mental slowness that can sometimes come from prescription sleep medication.
