Get More Good Bacteria

When you think of bacteria you probably cringe. Contrary to popular belief, certain kinds of bacteria are actually very good for you. There are actually thousands of types of bacteria which are essential for good health and many of the functions in our body rely on these bacteria.

There are 20 times more bacteria in our cells than in our bodies. At any one time each person has more bacteria in their body than the number of people who are alive in Earth. Although it may sound disgusting, this bacteria is keeping you alive and well. One of the main functions of bacteria is to aid in digestion. When we eat food, enzymes from our intestines, stomach, pancreas, and liver break down carbohydrates into sugars, protein into amino acids, and fat into glycerol. Many plant foods contain indigestible starches which cannot be broken down so they cannot be absorbed in the upper intestinal tract.  This is where the bacteria comes in – once the starches reach the colon the bacteria ferment it to form fatty acids which serve to protect your intestines.  Your diet and lifestyle are the main factors on whether or not you have enough good bacteria in your body at any given time. You want higher numbers of probiotic bacteria because of all the good they do: They produce vitamin A and the B vitamins, enhance your absorption of nutrients, help you digest food properly, and stimulate your body&undefined;s production of immune-boosting substances.

Probiotic bacteria can be found in foods such as yogurt, fruits, legumes, and whole grains. Probiotic supplements are also available and can benefit most people.
