Tips For A Healthy Summer BBQ Season

Summer is all about being outdoors, even when it comes to your cooking. No one wants to slave over a hot stove when the heat is already unbearable so a lot of people end up pulling out the BBQ and taking the cooking to the outdoors. Unfortunately, it is easy to overload on calories on the BBQ with heavy sauces, meats and other sides such as potato salad and chips. In order to stay healthy and lean but not give up the BBQ, follow these three easy tips:

1. Use fresh herbs. Instead of slathering on calorie heavy sauces to add flavor try using fresh herbs. Not only do they give dishes a lot of flavor but they have minimal calories and many contain antioxidants and other healthy compounds. They can be used in marinades or put right on top of meat to add a bit of flavor. Make sure to chop them up first as this helps to release their full flavor.

2. Fish. The most common BBQ meats are steak, chicken and pork but you should also try BBQing fish. Not only does it taste amazing but it is a lighter meal with a ton of health benefits. Salmon is one of the best options and it is easily cooked on the BBQ. Simply wrap it in tinfoil and add some flavor like fresh squeezed lemon and chopped dill, wrap and cook for about 20 minutes. You will get a dose of Omega 3 fatty acids which are great for your heart, skin, hair and nails.

3.  Use Skewers. BBQ skewers are easy, delicious and can help you cut calories . Instead of loading your plate with food, skewers tend to separate it out and you will eat less. You can even use fresh rosemary stalks as skewers which is both great for the environment and are basically free if you use the Rosemary leaves in your meals. Load the skewers with veggies such as peppers, onions, zucchini and tomatoes and minimize the amount of meat - try having 3 veggies for one piece of meat to cut calories but increase nutrient content in your meals.

Summer should be a time to enjoy the beautiful weather and the company of your family and friends without having to worry about sacrificing your health or diet. By following these tips you can rest assured that you are not sacrificing your health.
