Weight Loss For Earth Day

Since Earth day is coming do something that is not only good for yourself, but good for the Earth - lose weight ! Being slim not only gives you a ton of health benefits but it is actually good for the planet in more ways than one.

Researchers estimate that a population of one billion people who are slim save about one billion tonnes of carbon dioxide from being released into the air in comparison with the same amount of people who are overweight. One reason for this is because people who are slimmer tend to use cars more which is the main source of carbon dioxide pollution. People who are in shape tend to walk, cycle, and even use the bus more than those who are overweight. Another reason why a population is better for Mother Earth is because slim people eat less which translates into less food demand. Transporting food all over the world by vehicle, plane, or ship is a major cause of pollution today. Vegans and vegetarians also tend to be leaner - eating a diet plentiful in plant based foods is much better for the environment than a diet which consists of many meat products. Meat production causes about 20% of all global emissions today and going meat free for even one day a week can make a big impact on climate change. Although it does take energy to grow plants, much of it can be done by the sun. Feeding animals, slaughtering them, cleaning them, packaging them, and transporting them can take its toll on the environment.

If you are already a fit person, do your part to contribute to the health of the environment. Minimize vehicle travel by resorting to other means of transportation or arrange to carpool with friends or co-workers. Eat food that is grown by local farmers, and make sure to buy organic whenever possible.
