Reducing Spring Allergies

April showers may bring spring flowers, but they also bring allergies . March through to November is the worst time for allergies. Pollens, grass, ragweed, and other irritants are present in the air through this time – they are normally spread by the wind and land in peoples eyes or skin but can also get into their nose and lungs. This leads to symptoms including a runny nose, watery eyes , itchy throats, and uncontrollable sneezing.

It is impossible to completely avoid these allergens, but there are definitely precautions that can be taken to reduce your exposure to them. Start by keeping your windows closed to prevent unneccesarry irritants from coming into your house. You can also keep your vehicle windows closed when traveling. Although its obviously hard to avoid pollen during this season when it is all over the place, consider staying inside at the times when it is most apparant in the air – from 5am to 10am. If you do go outside, washing your hair and face once you come inside can be helpful in minimizing irritation. Do not dry your clothes on a clothesline outside either, or the pollen will stick on them and cause your allergies to worsen.

People with pollen allergies are often sensitive to other irritants which can be present year round such as dust mites. To avoid these bugs, make sure to thoroughly clean your house regularly-including replacing mattresses, sheets, and other linens on a regular basis.
