3 Late-Night Snacks

We all get a craving for late night snacks every now and then. Although it is ideal to eat your last piece of food about three hours before you go to bed, sometimes the reality is that you just need a bit to eat before you go to bed. Here are three late night snacks that are reasonably healthy and you wont feel guilty indulging when those late night cravings hit.
1. Pretzels. Instead of reaching for those fat laden (but so good) potato or taco chips reach for the pretzels instead. Most chips are deep fried which equals more fat and more pounds for you. Pretzels are baked meaning fewer calories and they are very crunchy which can very satisfying. To spice things up, put out a little bowl of spicy mustard for dipping.
2.Air-popped popcorn. Throw away the microwave popcorn and cook it the real way. The microwavable popcorn bags are super convenient but not so great for you as they are filled with fattening butter and salt. Popcorn is actually good for you if you make it yourself and watch the added ingredients. Popcorn does contain fibre so eating some of this tasty treat late at night can actually be beneficial. If you are a seasoning kind of person try adding a dash of garlic powder or a sprinkle of parmesan cheese instead of butter and salt.
3. Cheese sandwich. If you are craving carbs you can make a half of a cheese sandwich which is relatively good for you. Start by using whole grain bread and lightly toasting it. Cover the bread with a thin layer of mustard (not mayo as it is very fattening). Next you can add one slice of your favorite cheese and some tomatoes. Sprinkle some salt and pepper on it and put it into the toaster oven for a few minutes to melt the cheese. You will get some calcium, vitamin D, and protein in this tasty late night snack.
Late night snacking does not have to be filled with guilt. Choosing the right kinds of foods and eating small portions will ensure that you are getting your nutrients and fulfilling your cravings without all the added fat. If you are really hungry try drinking a big glass of water before you eat which will make you feel more full and keep you from overeating.
