Exercise The Brain
It doesnt take a genius to figure out that exercising affects your brain somehow. The aftermath of a good workout includes a clear mind, better focus, more positive energy, and just an overall good feeling. But why?
The brain is a thinking organ which learns and grows by interactions with the world. Physical exercise is great for your brain for numerous reasons. First of all, it increases your blood circulation and delivers more oxygen to the brain, helping it function better. Exercise also makes your heart pump harder, thereby enhancing energy production while removing waste or toxin removal which is present in your tissues and blood stream. Furthermore, neurotransmitters are released when a person engages in physical exercise. These chemicals can relieve both physical and mental pain.
Exercise affects the brain so much that it is clearly apparent in studies done on topics relating to this matter. For example, one study was conducted on 6,000 women during an eight year period. The study set out to compare the cognitive skill level of women who walked on a regular basis versus those who did not. When the cognitive abilities were compared, the women who commonly walked were much less likely to suffer from age-related memory loss and other declines in mental functioning. In the group that walked the longest distances researchers found up to a 40% decline in brain dysfunction. Another study shows that aerobic exercise can help protect the brain tissue from age-related damage and mental decline. According to researchers, the brain loses an average of 15% to 25% of its tissue between the ages of 30 and 90, and most of these losses are in the areas associated with memory, learning, and other thinking-related processes. Amazingly, exercise slows down this process of brain tissue loss dramatically.
Although many people already know that exercise makes them feel great, the outstanding evidence regarding the long term affects of exercise on the brain cannot be argued with. Exercise makes you feel great, helps you lose weight, lowers your cholesterol , strengthens your heart, and keeps your brain young.
