An Introduction to Pilates
Pilates is a physical exercise program that was first developed in the early 20th century by a man named Joseph Hubertus Pilates. He developed the exercise program with the aim to heal returning veterans from World War I. Currently there are well over eleven million people around the world who practice this exercise on a regular basis, and many credit it for their dramatic weight loss and overall physical health. Mr. Pilates called this form of exercise Contrology, because his method uses the mind to control the muscles in the body.
Pilates teaches the participant to focus on breath and perfect alignment of the spine, in order to target core muscles. The focus of each exercise is more on the quality of movement, rather than the quantity. Some boast that this makes the participator feel much more energized after a Pilates session than they may after a traditional strenuous work out. Pilates also makes sure the body works all together as one machine, rather than over working or straining one muscle group. Some exercises are performed on specialized mats or equipment, but most movements can be done on a simple floor mat, making this exercise routine extremely useful for all kinds of people. Smaller accessories such as balls, pilates rings, and resistance bands can also be added to the work out for variety, and as an added challenge.
Pilates has grown immensely in popularity since the 20th century, though its focus is a little different than from when it was first developed. As its popularity grows, so does its availability-Pilates is now taught at gyms, spas, rehabilitation clinics, and community centers around the world. By using this exercise system as well as a well balanced diet and the proper supplements, you will be well on your way to a lean body and healthy weight loss.
