Balancing Work and Health

Let’s face the truth-most of our waking lives are spent at work. We all need to support ourselves and our family. Unfortunately, our work environment paired with time constraints has a way of getting in the way of our health goals. Here are three tips to keep healthy and fit even though you may feel that your work leaves you with no time to do so.

1.      Make your own lunch. It’s simple: brown-bag your lunch. Home-made fare is almost always going to be healthier than the staff cafeteria or take out options which are available. Make a simple salad paired with a yogurt and a piece of fruit. Also be sure to bring healthy snacks to keep you filled throughout the day such as an apple, trail mix, or a piece of cheese.

2.      Choose a healthy form of transportation. With gas prices soaring, choosing to walk or bike to work is not only healthy, but it’s inexpensive. You may be surprised that biking to work is usually even faster than driving your vehicle. By starting your day out with a little exercise and ending it the same way you will feel and look great.

3.      Make the most of your day. Staying organized and going to work prepared may just let you sneak away for a few minutes of exercise throughout the day. If you have your workload organized and you know exactly what you need to do and when, chances are you will be less frazzled. Instead of grabbing a coffee or working right through your twenty minute coffee break, go for a quick power walk. Twenty minutes of exercise twice a day can add up to a few pounds of weight loss over the course of a month.

With a little planning your healthy habits at work can be fun, nutritious and inexpensive. Along with a quick walk to work in the morning and a stroll at lunch or coffee time, you’ll have weight loss under control while still managing your career.
