An Apple-A-Day Still The Best Advice
While the old adage an apple a day keeps the doctor away may be simple dismissed as an old wives tale, the truth of the matter is that eating an apple a day can really benefit your health. Apples are one of the simplest but most nutrient rich snacks you can eat. Over and over again the nutritional content of apples has been shown to be a great boon to the body. Taking up this one simple saying and making it a daily practice might actually help to keep the doctor at bay.
- Apples contain high levels of vitamin C, and vitamin C has been shown to be a powerful immune system booster. Too often people do not get enough vitamin C. Vitamin C deficiency can result in poor immune function, easy bruising, easy bleeding of gums and overall poor dental health. So if you’d like to keep the dentist away as well (at least painful dental surgery resulting from gum disease) biting into a shiny red apple is one of the best things you can do.
- Apples are also rich in bioflavanoids. Bioflavnoids, like vitamin C are essential to your health. Bioflavanoids are specifically good for preventing heart conditions and heart disease. If you have been eating a poor diet you may be deficient in these nutrients and your heart might be at risk. A simple apple each day will help ensure you start giving your hear the nutrients it needs to keep the blood a pumpin’.
- Apples are terrific snack foods and as such they can replace less healthy alternatives. Reaching for a nice golden delicious apple instead of that bag of chips will not only help your health but also your waistline. Because of the natural fruit sugars contained in apples you will still get that little boost you were hoping for to get you through the day. But instead of working your way towards early onset diabetes or obesity and therefore to the doctor’s office or emergency room, you’ll be working your way into a smaller pant size. The choice seems pretty easy when you put it that way!
- Finally, apples have been shown to help promote proper brain functioning. So next time you’re giving your teacher an apple in hopes of improving your grades, you may want to bite into one yourself as well. Apples contain phytonutrients, substances that are important protectors against neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Eating an apple a day will therefore help improve and maintain brain function, making apples a great study snack.
While eating an apple every day may not prevent every known disease or disorder, they do have enough nutrients and advantages to boost being one of the supper foods. As snacks they keep you energized without adding undue calories and they can help keep you mind and body in excellent shape too. Don’t ignore your mother’s well meant advice. Pick up an apple every day and crunch your way to good health.
