5 Tips for Oral Health

Although you may think a four year old is the only one that really needs a lesson on brushing your teeth, the fact is that most people do not follow proper oral hygiene habits. From brushing incorrectly or not flossing to bad techniques, many people are doing it wrong. Oral hygiene is directly related to overall health, so it is very important to take care of your teeth and gums. Here are five tips for oral health.

1. Replace your toothbrush every couple of months. Think about what your toothbrush is for-removing plaque and food from your teeth. Changing your toothbrush every few months is not a bad idea considering the amount of bacteria it can hold.

2. Use a brush with soft bristles. Hard, long bristles can push back gums and cause sensitivity to teeth. Using a brush with soft bristles which vary in height will ensure you get a gentle and safe clean on and in between your pearly whites.

3. Brush for at least three minutes. Most people brush their teeth absentmindedly, some while doing other tasks. Often it feels as if you have been brushing for five minutes when in reality it has only been a minute. Focus on brushing your teeth when doing it and brush for two minutes minimum.

4. Use an electric toothbrush. Electric toothbrushes are more efficient and require less energy than the old fashioned manual kind. They used to be expensive but these days you can buy a good electric toothbrush for under $10.

5. Floss every single day. Flossing is extremely important in oral health. Flossing reaches what brushing doesn’t, and cleans between the teeth and gums where bacteria ridden food can lie. Try to make it a habit to floss after breakfast in the morning and before you brush your teeth at bed time.

Oral health problems such as infections, cavities, and missing teeth affect a person’s physical, mental, and social well being. Keeping your mouth healthy is a crucial part of leading a happy and healthy life.
