4 Tips to Get Back To The Gym

If you have been a stranger to exercise lately but are thinking of getting back into working out, you are not alone. Many people find themselves taking a break from exercise due to family obligations, a personal or family crisis, working too much, or just because life can get hectic at times. Exercising is all about habit. If you are used to going to the gym it is easier for you to go through your normal routine. If you have taken an extended break you are probably afraid to get back into it. Here are four tips for getting yourself back on track.

1. Pencil exercise into your schedule. By setting aside an hour or so of exercise each day, you will feel obligated to go. Whether it is in the morning before the kids are awake, during your lunch hour at work, or in the evening, make it part of your daily routine.

2. Ease into it. If you try to run ten miles your first day back, you will be so sore the next day that it will deter you from getting back into the swing of things. It may also get you down because your body will not be as strong as it was when you were exercising regularly. Work yourself below your capacity for the first few weeks and gradually increase the intensity of your workouts from there.

3. Document your results. One of the biggest motivators for work out buffs is the results that they see. Weight is not always the best number to track because muscle weighs more than fat does. Instead measure yourself weekly and keep track of inches you lose. Trying on that old pair of jeans that have always been a little tight can also be a good indication of any progress you may have made.

4. Get a work out buddy. Making a commitment to a friend to exercise will make you commit to exercise and can even make you work harder. It is hard to get bored exercising with someone and the social aspect of the work out can be just as rewarding as the exercise itself.

Half the battle of exercise is just getting there. By following these tips you will be well on your way to your fitness goal, whether it be to lose weight , tone up, or just get healthy again.
