3 Ways to Keep Children Active

Many people who have children are finding it harder and harder to get them active. With the introduction of new video games and TV shows, kids are tending to flock more towards the couch than the outdoors. It is very important to keep children active as it keeps them healthy. Not only will it keep them from being overweight but exercise will ensure your children develop properly. Here are five ways to keep your kids off the couch and get them moving.

1. Make family time activities. Set aside a period of time each day in which you do things as a family but make sure they involve exercise. Go for a hike, go swimming, or do something special and fun such as horseback riding. Not only will you get to spend time with your kids and make sure they are getting exercise, but you will get some yourself.

2. Make exercise fun. If you tell your kids they need to exercise, chances are that they are going to want to do anything but. Instead give them things to do such as bike riding or even doing things outside such as building a tree fort. The goal should be for the children to have fun and play, not just exercise.

3. Set rules and boundaries. If your kids have unlimited access to their Nintendo Wii or the TV whenever their favorite TV shows are on, chances are they are going to be putting in a lot of couch time. By setting rules and guidelines your children will be forced to do other activities. Restrict TV time or Nintendo time to 1 hour a day and stick to the rules.

Making sure your children have an active childhood is not only great for them physically but it is good for them emotionally too. They will develop better social skills, learn how to interact with others, and they will feel better about themselves.
