3 Healthy Habits During Pregnancy

Womens diet and lifestyle habits are more important during pregnancy than at any other time. The child that is growing inside you is completely dependent on you to protect, nourish, and care for them. For women that are first time mothers it can be quite overwhelming and hard to know exactly how to care for yourself when you find out that you are expecting. Here are three healthy habits to adhere to in order to keep yourself and your baby healthy during pregnancy.

1. Tweak your diet. No matter how you were used to eating before you were pregnant, it all needs to go out the window. Pregnant women now have another human being to worry about and not just their own health. Your baby eats everything you eat and there are no exceptions. Your baby needs certain nutrients such as vitamins , protein, iron and calcium for proper development. Pregnant women should eat a varied diet rich in fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, proteins and complex carbohydrates.

2. Avoid alcohol and drugs. As with your diet, anything you ingest goes straight to your baby. Pregnant women need to avoid alcohol and cigarettes at all costs-even second hand smoke. Also if you are pregnant and taking any medications you need to stop them until your doctor gives you the go ahead. Call your doctor as soon as possible for advice, but don’t stop taking medications without telling your doctor if you have a chronic or serious health condition that requires the medicine.

3. Get lots of rest. Pregnant women do get tired, it is inevitable. When you are pregnant you need a lot more rest than normal. Growing a baby is a lot of work and your body goes through so many changes that it can be exhausting. The only solution is rest and lots of it. Have naps when you can and make sure to get a good nights sleep each night. You should also minimize the amount of work you are doing around the house and at work.

Pregnancy is a big deal and women should not take it lightly. Being a mother is one of the most rewarding and challenging things that you can do but it does require some effort. Taking care of yourself and your baby all throughout your pregnancy is the first step.
